MAS COUTELOU

Located in the remote Languedoc village of Puimisson, outside any appellation and surrounded by farmers that sell their anaemic crop to the local co-operative, Jean-Francois (‘Jeff’) Coutelou has been a beacon of natural winemaking for decades since taking over the family domaine from his father. Mas Coutelou was officially certified as organic in 1987, at a time when only 200 hectares in the Hérault department were farmed this way (the figure today stands at over 20,000ha). In the following years, Jeff reduced the area under vine from 20ha to around 13ha, choosing to replace some of his vineyards with olive groves or other plants that would increase biodiversity. The varieties Jeff works with are all southern French and part of his estate has been turned into a nursery of forgotten indigenous grapes (including rarities such as Castets, Servant, Picardin and various obscure clones of Muscat). Today, Jeff is revered as one of the most dedicated viticulturists in France, and young winemakers come from all over Europe to visit him and learn about his methods in both the vineyard and the winery.

Jeff’s wines, fermented and aged in tank, made with zero SO2 or any other additions and bottled unfined and unfiltered, are among the cleanest and purest you will encounter in the natural wine world and the inventive label artwork reflects the creativity of the man himself. Perhaps the best known is ‘Vin des Amis’, a vibrantly juicy wine that is incredibly expressive and relentlessly drinkable. Beyond that, each vintage will yield a range of deliciously individual wines, though Jeff won’t bottle certain cuvées in some years if he doesn’t feel it is representative of the wines’ personality. Perennial favourites like ‘Flambadou’, ‘PM’ rosé and ‘7 Rue de la Pompe’ are, when conditions suit, joined in the range by various white bottlings and red wines such as ‘Vigne Haute’, ‘5 SO’ and ‘On Peut Pas Vraiment Dire Que…’, though Jeff is known to invent a new cuvée at a moments’ notice!
