“I hate German Riesling, apart from Koehler-Ruprecht Auslese Trocken ‘R’. That’s one of the best white wines in the world,” renowned Mount Etna winemaker Frank Cornellisen once told Keeling and Andrew. We immediately found ourselves a bottle, and loved it so much we began importing their wines.

Koehler-Ruprecht was founded in 1700s, building a reputation for quality dry Rieslings during a period when the style was nowhere near as popular as today. The Spätlese and Auslese trocken designations mean a lot here (not surprising considering they practically invented them) – so much so that they pulled out of the VDP once authorities banned the practice of declaring both the pradikat and the word trocken on a label at the same time. Estate Manager Dominik Sona’s decision was in keeping with the uncompromising ethos of previous long-time domaine owner, Bernd Philippi, who he worked alongside before taking over in 2012.

Koehler-Ruprecht’s whole production is made using identical traditional techniques, an approach that Dominik says makes them "the last of the mohicans", with spontaneous fermentations in old oak casks taken to full dryness before ageing in large-format old barrels (some as old as 120 years). The entry level Kallstadt Riesling is a great value introduction to the range, but the limestone-rich ‘Saumagen' is the prime vineyard of the village and the terroir that fosters Koehler-Ruprecht’s top wines. Domink describes the Kabinett Trocken as being the “most refreshing”, Spätlese Trocken as the "most elegant" and the Auslese Trocken the "most complex" – and they all live up to his billing. The 'R' and 'RR' wines (R stands for 'rare') are only produced in great vintages and are among the most age-worthy and complex dry whites in Germany. Just like Frank told us.
