In less than a generation, Vincent Dureuil has transformed his family's estate into the leading name in the Côte Chalonnaise.The organically farmed Domaine Dureuil-Janthial extends 20ha across the south of Burgundy around the village of Rully, as well as to two tiny plots in Puligny-Montrachet and Nuits-Saint-Georges.An idyllic but often overlooked part of Burgundy, the Côte Chalonnaise is traditionally seen as humble terroir, where many growers long prioritised quantity over quality and sold their crop to négociants. But its south-easterly, clay-limestone slopes actually have much in common with the Côte d'Or's best vineyards, just a few kilometres north.In the winery, the whites see 25% new oak and are finished in stainless steel, while reds are fully destemmed and undergo a cold maceration prior to slow fermentation, followed by yet more gentle maceration. They are matured in barrels and finished in stainless steel, Roulot-style.Equally adept at white and red winemaking – a rare skill that only a handful of Burgundians have mastered – Dureuil-Janthial's wines have long been solid examples of Rully terroirs, but the last few vintages are in a different class altogether.
